Sym-Bionic Titan – “Tashy 497”

It loves the little squshy mushies!

I do not have a great deal to say about “Tashy 497” because there isn’t a lot to say about it. Which isn’t to say it’s a bad episode, because it’s not. It’s just kind of there, in the episode list, kicking back, taking it easy.

I think my my trouble is that the episode is just so beige that it’s kind of hard to form a really solid opinion about the episode, which is a little frustrating after the great run the show has on recently. But “Tashy 497” still has some entertaining aspects to it, which prevents the episode from being a complete waste.

I did like that opening with the emphasis on Modula’s frustration. I like that Modula doesn’t appear to get furious angry. Furious angry is boring. Cold, simmering angry is more interesting to watch, and is more in line with the cool-headedness that Modula clearly has (he didn’t break a sweat stopping those mechas in the last episode before he went all evil). And any insight into Modula is welcomed by me, as I like to better understand the villain, and like for the villain to evolve beyond “Destroy them!” because that, like furious anger, gets boring.

And I did like the final big sequence as they decide what to do with Tashy 497. I love when this show goes for mood lighting  because it does so well. I don’t think dusky isolation has been better captured than it is on that abandoned farm. And the bit of music that played after the group has decided it has no choice but to bring Tashy 497 into space was a glorious composition.

I just wish they had saved it for something else.

I get that having to sacrifice Tashy 497 like that was hard, but I’m don’t entire buy that it was the hardest thing they’ve ever done, nor that they had enough time with the creature to really become that attached. As a result, it felt like the music was tacked one to create a stronger emotional connection than the narrative warranted. This is a perfectly smart move, and one that countless shows and films do.  It just didn’t work for me, and felt like a bit of music that needed to be for something more serious (like Octus or The King dying).

Everything between the opening the closing, however, was inoffensive and cute but not exactly my cup of tea. It doesn’t ruin the show for me by any means. Narrative breaks are necessary, after all. I just kind of wish it had been a bit bolder.
