- The Marriage Ref
Putting deconstructionist comedians on a panel for an absurd show was/is a bad idea. Who thought Ricky Gervais was not going operate only in meta-jokes about the production (and not the couple) or that Larry David was going to spin a couple of funny yarns instead of trying to tear the show down around him? And Madonna was supposed to balance them out? Please. Either the producers have no foresight or they are sabotaging the show on purpose because they see how ridiculous and ephemeral it is. Space-filler. How far down the line was this on Seinfeld’s list of pitches do you think? Fourth? Fifth?
By the way, nice use of “jackass.”
I was trying to figure out who should be in Madonna’s chair instead of her, to round out the absurdity, and I figured it out: Eddie Izzard. Between the three of them, the show might’ve very well been destroyed beyond repair.
That’s the absolute truth. But, in its place, we might have birthed one of the greatest shows of all time. Eddie Izzard, Larry David, and Ricky Gervais travel like show business locusts, appearing together on stupid shows and tearing them asunder. It’ll be a sensation!
Team them up with Patton Oswalt and they be two pairs on The Amazing Race, tearing it up! BRILLIANCE!
